How Does Santa Go Down the Chimney?
Publisher: Walker Books
It’s a question that has bedevilled generations of children, and noone has ever really been able to come to a satisfactory answer. How DOES Santa get down all of those chimneys – considering the variations in size, and the fact that many houses don’t have chimneys at all? There is the key under the flowerpot – but nobody is supposed to know about that. Right?
Does Santa just tighten his belt, or does he shrink to the size of a mouse? Does he ever get partway down the chimney, and then need one of the reindeer to give him a kick? Or, verging into the surreal, does he flatten himself and slide under the door, or slip through the pipes and run out of the tap? Does he have night vision goggles? And what does he do about dogs?
After considering all the options, Barnett and Klassen conclude that we might never know how Santa gets in to leave us our presents. But, ultimately, we can all agree that we’re glad that he does.
This absolutely brilliant Christmas picture book is just as deadpan and hilarious as you might expect, given this is the team that gave us Circle and Square, and The Wolf, the Duck and the Mouse. New and old fans of Klassen’s will love his adorable, offbeat illustration, and the text is warm and quirky too. A real treat.
