What to Read After... David Walliams 17/02/25
Hide and Seek
Publisher: Piccadilly
Ned and his mother are on the move from the covert operations centre at Bletchley Park to an isolated community in Wales. His dad isn’t happy about them going but they are on an important mission to protect some of the country’s priceless artworks from a possible Nazi invasion.
Keeping their activities secret is vital to the success of the mission but not all the locals are as welcoming as they might have hoped and mistrust is already in the air even before details of their work are leaked to the press. Is there a traitor in the village? Or could the problem lie closer to home?
For the most part this is a gentle story that shines a light on a little-known story from World War II and shows how art and music can bring people together.
With an underlying mystery and just a few moments of jeopardy, much of the tension is generated by the unknown identity of a potential traitor and the conflict between locals and incomers in a remote rural location.
Featuring fascinating period details, fans of historical fiction will find much to enjoy and may also learn things about WWII that they were unaware of.
