Heriot Tarbas has always been a troubled child but whether he causes, or attracts, trouble is unclear.

When, at the age of twelve, he is removed from his home and family to become the Magician of Hoad, attendant to the king himself, Heriot foils attempts on his life and other unforeseen perils to achieve apparent success and respect.

Forming close friendships with both a royal prince and a thieving street urchin, Heriot's loyalties are not the only thing to be torn when political intrigue and ruthless ambition combine and clash threatening to bring violence and destruction to a peaceful land.
