Ella and her Mum live in a high rise flat, where their lives are predictable and neatly regulated, and Ella's 'special friend' is a doll. However Mum has a new special friend, Joe, and Ella resents the change to the pattern of life he brings, and rejects his attempts to become part of the family.
She doesn't want to move into a bigger house, but when Joe saves her lost doll from the dog which finds it, Ella finally accepts him, and the new family setup.
