Peter Rabbit: what to read next

Beatrix Potter’s Peter Rabbit books have captivated generations of readers with their tales of mischief and beautifully rich illustrations. There’s something timelessly appealing about the natural settings and animal friends in these stories, not to mention the thrill of the adventures with angry farmers and cunning foxes! Many children will recognise Peter from modern adaptations too; he appears in a popular tv series, films and much more besides.

But if your child has finished Peter Rabbit and is ready for more, we have curated some recommendations we hope they will enjoy.   • Brambly Hedge – Summer Story

Jill Barklem’s Brambly Hedge – Summer Story is one of four seasonal stories set in the adorable world of Brambly Hedge. Just like in Peter Rabbit, the mice in this story have burrows filled with cute, tiny furniture which children will love. The stories in the series are gentle and feature the most incredible illustrations which bring the natural world to life on every page. 

  • One Snowy Night

    This is a heartwarming story of animals in winter – the story teaches children to look and think about the world around them.

One Snowy Night by Nick Butterworth is a lovely picture book featuring Percy the park keeper. When heavy snow falls on the park the animals come one by one to knock on Percy’s hut door looking for shelter. This is a really sweet and warming story which includes lots of woodland animals, perfect for a winter’s night! 

  • Winnie-the-Pooh

    by A A Milne, illustrated by E H Shepard

    No child’s library could be complete without A A Milne’s stories about Pooh, Christopher Robin and their friends in the Hundred Acre Wood.

Winnie-the-Pooh is another classic character who needs little introduction. Children who enjoyed the natural surroundings and charming adventures of Peter Rabbit will love the tales of Christopher Robbin, Winnie the Pooh, Piglet, Tigger, Eeyore and friends in the beautiful Hundred Acre Wood. 

  • A Bear Called Paddington

    by Michael Bond, illustrated by Peggy Fortnum

    Paddington, the brown bear from darkest Peru, is found by the Brown family on Paddington Station with his hat, duffel coat and marmalade sandwiches.

Another series which has gained popularity with recent adaptations is Paddington. This plucky bear with his trademark hat and marmalade sandwich is now a star of the big screen, but Michael Bond’s original A Bear Called Paddington book still maintains a unique charm as Paddington tries his hardest to be honourable but inevitably ends up causing hilarious mishaps! 

Modern animal stories:

For a more modern set of animal stories, try the Tales from Acorn Wood series by the powerhouse duo of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. These books are perfect for younger readers with their board format, playful rhymes, simple stories and lift-the-flap elements. 

  • There’s a Mouse in my House

    by Ross Collins

    Long-suffering Bear has a mouse in his house that just won’t leave – and he’s eating all the food and making such a mess! Themes of tolerance and looking past first impressions are illustrated beautifully in this fun rhyming book about two unlikely housemates.

Leaving the countryside setting but featuring just as much animal fun is the wonderful There’s a Mouse in my House by Ross Collins. This book is just perfect to read aloud with its musical, rhyming text and its simple but characterful illustrations and will almost certainly be one that is requested again and again! 

  • Rabbit’s Bad Habits

    by Jim Field, illustrated by Jim Field 

    2016 5 to 9 years

    Gentle Bear wakes up early from hibernation one day and decides to build a snowman. Grumpy, know-it-all Rabbit comes along, and then Wolf, too. A beautiful modern classic about friends and sharing.

Rabbit’s Bad Habits is the first in the Rabbit and Bear series by Julian Gough and Jim Field. This hilarious double act of a patient bear and a rather grumpy rabbit is set in a beautifully illustrated woodland and is loads of fun to read. There are more titles in the series to get stuck into which we would also highly recommend. 

  • Beti and the Little Round House

    by Atinuke, illustrated by Emily Hughes

    Follow the adventures of Beti and her baby goat Naughty in this beautifully written and illustrated book as they explore the natural world which surrounds her little round house in the Welsh countryside. 

Beti and the Little Round House is a collaboration between Atinuke and Emily Hughes. It is set in a woodland in Wales where Beti lives with her family in a charming little home. The book features four short stories with natural themes and Beti is a wonderfully curious (and at times mischievous) character who loves to explore. Each chapter is the perfect length for a bedtime story.

  • Tiny the Secret Adventurer

    by Aisha Bushby, illustrated by Kübra Teber

    Tiny is a miniature girl who lives among the petals of a sunflower. She embarks on a big adventure when she goes in search of friendship. This gentle, inclusive tale explores the effects of bullying and demonstrates the importance of tolerance and kindness.

Tiny the Secret Adventurer is a superb book written by Aisha Bushby and illustrated by Kübra Teber. Tiny is a miniature girl with a big heart who lives in the petals of a sunflower in the grounds of a school. In an attempt to make new friends, she has a mini adventure involving some mean mice and a frog in need of rescue. A sweet and uplifting book with plenty of illustrations throughout. 

  • Croaky: Search for the Sasquatch

Croaky: Search for the Sasquatch is a wonderfully silly book which stars a wannabe adventurer frog called Croaky Hopper. Much like Peter Rabbit, Croaky often acts without thinking through his plans, leading to many hilarious situations and plenty of highly illustrated action scenes.

Pablo and Splash is a graphic novel by Sheena Dempsey which is perfect for children who are beginning to read independently. It follows two plucky penguins as they try to have a relaxing holiday, only to find themselves trapped in the Cretaceous period being hunted by hungry dinosaurs! This book is heaps of fun and children will love the witty back and forth between the two penguin pals.
