We’re the same but different too.

Various children compare themselves to animals in this heartwarming celebration of individuality. All animals are similar – everyone likes eating breakfast! – but different too: giraffes are tall, and snails are slow, for instance. Plus, our feelings can be the same: we can all feel happy or hot.

This charming book introduces some opposites – big/small, young/old and so on – in an amusing way, and it’s important to note that each difference is presented as equal. No characteristic is better than another. The rhyming text is simple yet funny, but it’s the illustrations that provide the greatest humour. Kate Hindley’s animals are friendly and cute, and there are a lot of funny comparisons, be it a loud roaring lion next to a child quietly playing with blocks, or a cheetah in a racing car next to a snail. There is a lot to laugh about on each spread, meaning that this would be a fantastic book to read and then talk about with a young child. What other differences can they spot? Which animal are they most like? Utterly delightful.
