About this book

Ed is knocked unconscious when his dad’s yacht is hit by a motorboat and he feels disorientated when he wakes up on a tiny, unfamiliar beach. The only other person around is an overbearing young girl, Steff, who demands that they explore together, much to Ed’s annoyance.

The pair are startled to discover that they are in the Realm, a magical land ruled by a dragon and protected by Astolpho, a grumpy, armoured pangolin.

Astolpho explains that, in order to return home, the children will need to obtain the tears of the dragon, who resides at the top of an immense spire. Their quest is fraught with danger, as they are relentlessly pursued by a swarm of deadly butterflies, while also being hunted by the Silver Kin, a pack of bloodthirsty wolves. As they literally run for their lives, the children must decide what they are willing to sacrifice in order to secure their freedom.

Fantasy and reality blur in this imaginative, thought-provoking tale, which explores the importance of resourcefulness, courage and loyalty. A compelling read, the exciting plot has plenty of twists and turns, and the characters are wonderfully inventive.
