About this book
Nell and her family are moving in to Together Street and Ash takes Nell on a tour. They say hello to all the neighbours, who live in very different homes - houses, flats, even a houseboat. Ash knows everyone, and they are all very friendly. The children part with a promise to meet at the community centre that afternoon - where Ash has laid on a surprise for Nell and her family!
This is a warm, welcoming hug of a book. Everyone's family and home is different, but they're all part of the same community, which is an important point, made in a very gentle way. The simple text is partly told in speech bubbles, and once the surprise is known to the reader, it would be fun to go back and find references to it. Similarly, there are elements of the surprise to find in the detailed illustrations that keen-eyed readers would enjoy noticing. There is a diverse mix of characters and families depicted, meaning that many readers may see themselves or their friends represented. A lovely book to share with any young child, but particularly one who might be worried about moving house, or school.

Books about community
As the wonderful Benjamin Zephaniah put it, 'people need people'. Humans thrive in communities. These books celebrate the power of working together towards a goal, and the joy in caring about each other. There are many different communities showcased in this selection.
