About this book

Who’s ready to answer the family quiz? Let’s try to work out what a family is!

Written in the form of a rhyming series of questions, The Family Quiz depicts all kinds of families, whether that’s a boy and his dad, a family with lots of dogs, a family of friends, a musical troupe, a family that does yoga or a family that’s a girl and her grandparents.

There are lots of questions to answer, both about the makeup of the family – beautifully illustrated in joyous diversity by Yasmeen Ismail (including crocodiles) but also about the behaviour of those families. Does your family argue, and then make up again? Is it noisy or quiet? Does it support you in all you do, and is it essentially just a collection of people that love one another?

The overriding message in Tregoning and Ismail’s bouncy, cheerful book about the many different types of family is that family isn’t about a set formula – it’s about love and inclusion. This is a wonderful book to help little ones understand different families, and its Ahlberg-esque rhyme would also make it a lovely bedtime read.

About the illustrator

Yasmeen Ismail is an Irish writer and illustrator living in Bristol, making children's picture books. As much as she would like to just dash off a book, it has to have some worth. So she's compelled to write and draw to try, just a little bit, to make a tiny difference. She wants her stories to uplift everyone who reads them.

Yasmeen enjoys celebrating differences and giving her characters the confidence to be who they want to be, regardless of expectations. She says 'I have to keep in mind that whatever I create is going into the hands of a small child, and as such I have a responsibility to that little person. We all have a responsibility to them. And we should take that seriously.' Yasmeen writes and illustrates most of her books.
