About this book
Frog always knew her brother Tad was different but it was a shock when Grandad told her that one day Tad would die.
Despite his considerable difficulties, Tad is relentlessly enthusiastic about nature and life in general and his enthusiasm is infectious. But this year, he has become increasingly unwell and is eventually admitted to hospital.
From his bed he insists that Frog go to the local pond and collect frogspawn so he can watch the tadpoles grow but, as they do so, Tad’s health deteriorates further.
Frog can’t face their bedroom without him so she moves into a tent in the garden where she, and her eccentric new neighbour, Ari, make plans for Tad’s last summer to be the best and most magical ever.
This heartwarming and heartbreaking story intertwines joy, grief, hope, laughter and loss with the comfort and healing power that can be found in nature.
A very challenging subject is explored with sensitivity, insight and empathy but some readers may still find Tad and Frog’s story upsetting.
The book’s lasting message, however, is that life is what you make it, whatever the circumstances, however long or short it may be.
