About this book
13-year-old Tom Morgan was born in a bleak workhouse and only escaped it thanks to a teacher friend. Since then, he’s survived the streets of London through speed, keen observation skills, and his wits.
When his street child friends are all taken by the child snatchers, he is offered a chance to not only survive but thrive. A man known as the Corsair takes him to a school for thieves, and Tom learns about the Shadow League, comprised of four guilds – thieves, spies, assassins and politicos. They maintain balance in the world, supposedly.
Soon, Tom is being taught how to scam, deceive, and tackle any physical obstacles thrown in his path. And when he goes with the Corsair to the International Shadow Cup, all his skills will be tested to the utmost.
This assured debut novel is set in an original alternative world, where the major powers are the Japanese Empire, the Kingdom of Prussia and La Grande République de France. Yet contemporary children will connect with Tom and his feelings of betrayal, isolation and warm friendship at various parts of the plot.
The school setting is familiar too, and readers will enjoy the thrilling action throughout.
