A small child takes us on an auditory tour of her home. Together, we discover the huge range of sounds even a 'quiet' house actually makes if we stop and listen very quietly. There's the creak of a door, the hum of a fridge, but also noisier activities – the teatime chatter and bathtime play before bed.
Kip Alizadeh's illustrative style is enchanting. The energetic line drawings bring a charming little preschool protagonist to life, as we share her evening routine. Cunning little details make this book subtly inclusive – a folded white cane hanging with the coats in the hallway, hinting at visual impairment.
Particularly delightful is the relationship between the father and his children as we experience their lively evening meal; his hushed voice reading a bedtime story, the 'flip-flop of his friendly feet'. This is a book that radiates comfort, security, warmth and love.
A delightful picture of family life to which all children will relate, ingeniously interpreted through its sounds.
