About this book
Small is feeling grim and dark. There has been some yelling and banging. But Large will love Small no matter what. Small asks all sorts of questions about this love - what if Small was suddenly a bug? Or a crocodile? - and is reassured that their love will continue no matter what.
This warm hug of a book is ideal for reading with a child who has questions about love, or has separation anxiety - or even a child who's just had a temper tantrum. There is minimal text, and the text rhymes, making this lovely to read aloud. It offers a wide opportunity for relevance because the foxes Small and Large are never gendered and their relationship is never defined. There is simply unconditional love from Large. Death is mentioned too, and the answer is that love never dies. This story could be used to open all sorts of conversations, or simply as a way to calm down after an emotional outburst or tantrum.
This is a modern classic, originally published in 1999, beautifully illustrated by the very talented Debi Gliori.
