About this book

It’s hard to see a seahorse. They drift around near the seabed and use their curly tails to cling to rocks and seaweed. Some are as small as the end of your little finger.

But there is something magical, almost mythical, about these shy creatures that makes them fascinating. They capture our imagination with their unique, graceful form that is so unlike other marine animals.

In this book, Nicola Davies and Lou Baker-Smith give readers the opportunity to observe seahorses up close and understand more about the challenges they face.

Reading almost like a story, this non-fiction picture book is super accessible for younger children. The illustrations are immersive and really feel like underwater scenes – striking a nice balance between anatomical accuracy and picture book magic.

Nicola Davies’s text introduces age-appropriate biology about seahorses and then goes on to describe some of the threats they face from humans and environmental change.

The book ends on an optimistic note, however, as readers learn about conservation projects around the world and how individuals can contribute to protecting these amazing creatures.
