About this book
Anita the ant is the only ant in the colony without a job.
She can’t decide what she wants to do, so her sister shows her all the different jobs in and around the anthill. From nursery ants to guard ants, scout ants to farmer ants, every ant is busy! But which job will Anita choose?
This combination of fact and fiction is immensely appealing. There is a lot of information on ants in both words and pictures, and there are lovely details to spot in the illustrations. Anita travels round the world and encounters various other species of ants, too, adding an international element.
This would be fun to pore over together at home with a real animal lover, and it would be a useful book in the classroom to discuss habitats and describe animals’ features.
It even includes a Top Trumps-style spread of different soldier ants, with their various powers, such as spraying acid. Lots of fun.

Non-fiction graphic novels, comics and picture books
Graphic novels, comics, and picture books are hugely popular with children, blending image and text in a way that feels fun and welcoming. These formats make for engaging and often hilarious storytelling, but they can also be a wonderful way into learning about the real world: pictures can help break down big ideas, and speech bubbles and simple captions keep information clear and concise.
