About this book
With plenty of sweets stuffed in their pockets, a little boy and his Grandad are ready to go to their special place.
To get there, they walk through the wonky woods and across the railway before stopping to chat with the spotty dogs. And then they’re there, at “their” beach, Pebble Beach.
At the end of every day - filled with ice cream, pirate sword fights and seagull attacks - they each pick a pebble. After washing them clean in the waves, they paint their memories from the day on them with Grandad’s special paints. They’ve built up quite an impressive collection from all their adventures.
But then Grandad moves away from Pebble Beach. There’s no one to collect pebbles with anymore. No one to do that funny wobbly-knee dance.
With the help of his Mam, the young boy realises he may be able to bring Pebble Beach to Grandad.
This latest offering from Jarvis is a beautiful, heartwarming portrayal of the relationship between a child and his grandfather. Told in the grandson’s voice, the book celebrates those simple, easy days of enjoying someone else’s company and creating special memories.
Our Pebbles cleverly explores the themes of loss and grief without being explicit. It encourages readers to accept change – even when it makes you sad – and to hold on to cherished memories.

Books about grandparents
Take a look at some of our favourite books about the grandparents in our life. They're perfect for your child to share with their own granny or grandad, but otherwise with you – giving you the chance to chat about why grandparents are just so wise and wonderful. More seriously, a couple of these books also touch very well on some sad and delicate themes about the older relatives we love, and have loved, so much.
