The little girl in this book adores her two funny, kind and smart daddies – they’re great at playing treasure hunts and knights and dragons (and also not so great at cooking or painting – but that’s OK), and they’re big fans of reading stories to their daughter, too. Yet, to the little girl, the best story of all is how her daddies chose to adopt her as a baby and make her their daughter.
This rhyming picture book celebrating same sex parents is a gentle and sweet read, with the added bonus of including mention of a gay couple adopting their daughter. On one spread, we see the family’s adoption scrapbook that shows a variety of pictures of the family in their early days, plus baby photos and the title My Adoption Story. Of all her books, this is the little girl’s favourite.
It's essential for all children to see their families represented in books, and a delight to see adoption celebrated in this way. It’s a great way to open up the conversation about all the different shapes a family can take with all children, and a lovely book for children with two dads, or young adopted children, too.
