About this book

You are a brilliant, wonderful person and you belong in the world exactly as you are.

This affirmation sums up the tone of this warm, friendly book that will speak to every disabled child, but also any child (or adult) who wants to understand and to be an ally.

Written by a disabled journalist, and covering everyday topics including school, bullying, puberty, friendship, and doctors and hospitals, this is a useful and practical guide to growing up – and simply existing – as a disabled person.

Cathy Reay doesn’t shy away from the difficulties disabled people might face in our society, and she offers suggestions for facing these challenges. There is also a lot of positive messaging in these pages, too, through interviews with people who’ve gone through similar experiences and feelings, and from the repeated mantra that it’s society that needs to change, not disabled people. You are brilliant exactly as you are.

As well as explaining phrases and identities throughout, at the back there is a glossary, plus lists of some awesome books and helpful organisations and resources. Reay speaks to the young reader directly, sharing information and advice in an age-appropriate way. A practical and empowering read.
