Hank Goes Honk

About this book
Meet Hank the goose. He is very good at – HONK! – interrupting sentences – HONK! – and at pecking things. He honks during movies and he honks about himself all the time. HONK! Plus he steals cherries from cupcakes. Hank is not pleasant to be around. So he tries to turn over a new leaf. But what happens when he sees a huge, very poppable balloon?
This is a very funny picture book that will have children joining in with all the honking, so it’s not a cosy bedtime read! It is good fun, though, and has the narrator speaking directly to Hank the goose towards the end, which gives him the feel of a stubborn child. A child listening to this may even answer on his behalf, as well as honking, which might make them think about their own behaviour. The themes of being considerate to others, and of trying again if you mess up, are dealt with in a humorous yet encouraging way. We are never laughing at Hank or his victims. The fantastic illustrations have bright, boldly coloured plain backgrounds against which the various animals’ expressions shine. Duncan Beedie draws annoyed animals brilliantly – the eyebrows say it all! Great fun.
