About this book
Before and during the Second World War, Nazi leader Adolf Hitler formulated a plan to get rid of people he considered to be ‘different’. This is the true story of how one family was torn apart by his inhumane regime.
When Hitler annexes Austria in 1938, the happy and carefree childhood of brothers Fritz and Kurt is swiftly ended as the Nazis begin their systematic genocide of the Jewish people. While little Kurt is evacuated to America, teenaged Fritz and his father are captured and sent to a concentration camp.
This absorbing story of the Kleinmann family gives readers a perspective of the Holocaust from those who experienced it firsthand. While it covers some of the horrific acts perpetrated by the Nazis and the unimaginable things the brothers and their family face on a daily basis, it also highlights the extraordinary courage and endurance of those forced to live through those experiences, and the everyday acts of heroism they undertook to protect themselves and those they love.
Author Jeremy Dronfeld approaches this retelling with great care and sensitivity, setting the story in its historical context, including explanations of what the Holocaust was, how it came about and who was affected.
