Davey longs to be the class ‘star of the week’. He tries extra hard to arrive at school on time and keep his desk tidy. However, when it comes to keeping his mind from wandering, the struggles really begin. A dragon pinches his numbers in Maths. And when the class learn about Ancient Egypt, a mummy’s tomb is an invitation to hunt for treasures. Even PE is a challenge when it prompts another imaginative adventure. His teacher and classmates keep reminding him to pay attention but Davey is downhearted. Can he ever win the weekly award? 

This simple picture book, based on the author’s own experience of ADHD, is a fun but powerful reminder that every brain works differently. In Davey’s case, he might daydream but he’s actually trying hard, and listening and processing material in his own way. Davey proves this when he wows everyone with his show-stopping material in Art. We see a supportive teacher who encourages the class – and reader – to join her in celebrating creativity and people’s different strengths.  Useful end notes and strategies help parents and caregivers further understand inattentive ADHD.
