Everyone’s brain is unique to them. For the little girl in this picture book, ADHD adds a further difference. And for her, ADHD is a little drummer inside her head, tap-tap-tapping away all day. She tells us how sometimes the sound of the drum means she misses a few words when her mother is speaking to her. Other times, when the outside world gets noisy too, her little drummer beats furiously, fast and loud, and it can all get a bit overwhelming. But the drumbeat can also be reassuring, for example when she needs to shut out the world we see how she closes her eyes and focuses on the comforting beat of her little drummer, her much-loved friend who knows the rhythm of her heart. 

This vibrant, rhyming picture book reflects one individual’s experience of neurodivergence, with warmth, ingenuity and imagination. Its joyful illustrations positively leap off the page, with the ‘drummer ‘appearing as a little blue version of the protagonist, always at her side. It’s a perfect book for encouraging discussions around different forms of neurodiversity, but it’s also more than that. It’s a fun and universally appealing picture book, which celebrates the richness of human difference, inviting all young readers to understand, accept and take pride in the unique ways their minds work.
