About this book
Ever since Dad left home to move in with Tina, Ani has felt a mixture of sadness and anger. She finds it difficult to concentrate at school and hates the quiet of home now that it’s just her and Mum.
Unable to sleep, she often peers out of her bedroom window and is intrigued when she spots her neighbour, Nando, sneaking out of his house each night. Deciding to follow him, she is amazed when she discovers that he has befriended a fox, which he feeds every night. Nando agrees that Ani can join him on his nocturnal excursions and together they delight in the wonder of this enigmatic creature. As the two children discuss their lives and experiences, including the feelings of grief they feel regarding their absent fathers, a shy friendship develops between them.
Written in lyrical free verse and told in the first person, this tender novel vividly captures Ani’s voice. The rhythm of the narrative mirrors her complex emotions and helps readers empathise with both her and the other characters. Skilfully exploring themes of friendship, nature and the complex emotions of a family break-up, this poignant story is highly recommended.

Verse novels
Verse novels are often underrated or seen as an 'easier', more 'accessible' option, and it's true that fewer words per page might appeal to some readers. Yet verse novels can have impact precisely because they're more concise. These brilliant stories are all told with intense emotion, narrative tension and compelling characterisation.
