About this book
12-year-old Arian lives with his dad in Berkshire, where he is coming to terms with the loss of his mother. Then along comes a new foster sister in the form of Madlock.
She’s a “typical Milky Way galaxy born girl” and a red-haired whirling dervish of energy. Arian suspects her from the outset and, sure enough, finds out that she is a fugitive from the parallel world of Aerth, and a wielder of powerful warlock magick (yes, proper magick has a k).
Along with his neighbour Pete, Arian is whisked along on a perilous adventure as Madlock leads them through interdimensional wormholes to clear her name. To succeed, Arian must imbibe half of her magick and learn to control it, battling monsters beyond imagination while dealing with his own personal grief.
This thrilling debut rattles along at an exhilarating pace, largely fuelled by the unstoppable force that is Madlock. Readers will enjoy the humour of the back-and-forth banter and her wonderfully colourful and archaic turns of phrase.
Along with the laughs and action, this book touches on themes of grief and identity, and Arian has an upper limb difference which is referenced sensitively and incidentally in the storyline. The book is lightly illustrated throughout and well suited to fans of fast-paced, funny adventures.
