Website accessibility

We are committed to making our website easy to use for everyone.

For example, that means you should be able to:

  • change colours, contrast levels and fonts using browser or device settings
  • zoom in up to 400% without the text spilling off the screen
  • navigate most of the website using a keyboard or speech recognition software
  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver).

We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.

AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

Website design and content standards

We provide all content on the website to WCAG 2.0 AA compliance where possible. The standards we test against are taken from the technical standard Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0 (WCAG), published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).

Some of the specific actions we take include:

  • We try to write all our content in plain English, to make sure that it is useful to as many people as possible.
  • Content is separated by appropriate headings for ease of reading by humans and screen reading software.
  • Hyperlinks are as descriptive as possible, describing their purpose and location as necessary.
  • We avoid using text in images where possible, and always try to include text to describe image content.
