Why comics matter for young readers 02/12/24
Journey to the River Sea
Publisher: Macmillan Children's Books
This satisfyingly old-fashioned story is set in the early 1900s. Orphan Maia is thrilled to learn she is to live with relatives in South America. She cannot wait to experience the sights, sounds and smells of the Amazon and is particularly looking forward to meeting her twin cousins.
When Maia arrives, however, the family is far from welcoming and she is saddened to see that they have blocked out all evidence of the rainforest from their stuffy home. Maia turns to her strict yet kindly governess, Miss Minton, for company, and strikes up some unusual and rewarding friendships.
This enchanting story has all the trademarks of Eva Ibbotson's writing. Maia is a wonderful heroine, and Ibbotson weaves a charming, compelling and warm-hearted tale of friendship, our responsibility to those around us, and the importance of the natural world. As well as being an exciting adventure story, this award-winning contemporary classic will leave readers with plenty to think about.

This is a great read. The plot is set in Brazil, and we learn about the Amazon. But most importantly, it's a book about how a child should be encouraged to learn. This is an engaging read, and the plot advocates for a cross-curricular approach to learning with an emphasis on the importance of stimulating the child's curiosity, and giving her permission to learn independently. Lovely rambling tale.

I'd thought that maybe you'd written the whole story in like of a summary but it was a little bit humdrum and too terse!

I have never read this, but it looks very interesting and I will definitely read it! It looks like my kind of book. Besides, many reviewers say that the book was amazing, and one even said that it has some romance in it, even more my style! I look forward to reading it.

This book was amazing! You could really relate to the main character, Maia, and it was a book that I really couldn't put down. The dream of the Amazon always drew you in more, and yet there was so much suspense and always action at the same time. There was a little romance, action and lots of adventure but still suitable for most ages - from 9 to 13. It had a beautiful ending too which rounded up to an incredible book that's really worth a read.
