5 funny books for ages 7+

  • Guest recommendations

Author Ben Davis recommends five side-splitting stories.

I might be biased, but I think funny books are the best books.

Some of my favourite memories from childhood are me giggling and wheezing so hard over a book, it made my nan think I was coming down with some sort of fever. She always was a worrier.

Anyway, enough about my nan. If you like funny books as much as I do, check out these fantastic recommendations. If they don’t get you giggling and wheezing and nan-worrying, I’ll eat my hat.

Betty Steady and the Toad Witch by Nicky Smith-Dale (illustrated by Sarah Horne)

Such a funny book. There’s a horse in it called Simon Anderson. What more do you need?

  • Betty Steady and the Toad Witch

by Nicky Smith-Dale, illustrated by Sarah Horne

    2024 5 to 9 years

    • Adventure
    • Chapter books
    • Fantasy
    • Funny

Betty Steady is the fiercelyindependent guardian of the kingdom of Wobbly Rock. When she’s captured by the Toad Witch, Betty’s eccentric friends come to the rescue, and she’s surprised to discover that teamwork can be fun. This magical adventure is fast-paced, funny and utterly bonkers.

Dave Pigeon by Swapna Haddow (illustrated by Sheena Dempsey)

You’ll never look at pigeons in the same way again!

  • Dave Pigeon

by Swapna Haddow, illustrated by Sheena Dempsey

    2016 5 to 9 years

    • Funny

Dave Pigeon, the brilliant pigeon mastermind, is determined to find and eat all of your biscuits. The expressive illustrations complete a perfect funny book for younger readers.

My Headteacher is a Vampire Rat by Pamela Butchart (illustrated by Thomas Flintham)

I could have picked any Pamela Butchart one, but this is a particular favourite. I love how the story is told so breathlessly, like a kid who’s eaten too many sweets but just has to tell you what happened at school today.

Rise of Invisidog by Stuart Heritage (illustrated by Vincent Batignole)

Full-colour, full-action, full-funny. Invisidog is a big hit in the Davis household.

Murray and Bun: Murray the Knight by Adam Stower

Murray and Bun is such a fun series. It follows the adventures of Murray the cat and his sidekick Bun, and the magical worlds they end up in when they pass through the enchanted cat flap.

Postman Planet by Ben Davis, illustrated by Yasmin Sheikh, is out now.
