About this book
Benji attends Willow Wish School, on the edge of an ancient forest, where outdoor learning is an important part of the curriculum. During a lesson in the woods, Benji and his friends hear a mysterious humming sound coming from the heart of the forest. Following the melody, they realise that it’s emanating from a majestic oak tree, like a heartbeat, deep within the trunk. The oak is so formidable that they name it the Emerald King and imagine it is the ruler of all the trees.
One of the oak’s branches is broken and, inspired by his grandpa’s tales of magical nature spirits, Benji wonders if the tree is asking for their help. Vowing to discover how the tree was damaged, the children form the Woodland Explorers Club and make it their mission to protect the forest and its inhabitants.
This magical, nature-inspired mystery celebrates friendship, teamwork and caring for the environment. The book also contains a wealth of interesting nature facts, including examples of different forest habitats, information about wild deer and key facts about a range of woodland trees. Illustrated throughout with fun black-and-white artwork, this is the first tale in an exciting six-book series.
