Where’s Baby Chick?
by Ingela P Arrhenius
Interest age: 2 to 3
Published by Nosy Crow, 2020
About this book
In this spring-themed addition to the well-loved Mr and Mrs Felt Flap series, little readers are encouraged to look for various baby animals by checking behind sturdy and interestingly shaped felt flaps. When they look behind the final flap, they’ll be surprised to see a different kind of baby – themselves!
A lovely book to share with all children, it was also chosen by a BookTrust expert panel for gifting to little ones who are Deaf or hearing impaired. The use of questions, paired with the flaps, encourages communication between adult and child and helps create an interactive and shared reading experience. BookTrust’s expert panel also highlighted the benefits of the language and repeated question structure for those who use sign language.
The bright and bold illustrations offer plenty of stimulation, without the pages being overly busy. Plus, the mirror is a particularly great feature, as looking at faces is brilliant for babies’ development and encourages peek-a-boo games, which little ones love so much.
