About this book

One day, Michael stands in his kitchen and thinks, as he often does, about his son Eddie. He asks his cat Meg, ‘Is that the end?’ but Meg replies, ‘No, it’s the beginning.’

Going out for a walk to ponder Meg’s words, Michael gets on the bus and remembers how Eddie wriggled about and played games on the bus. Then, when he gets off the bus, he walks past the Arsenal football stadium and remembers how Eddie loved chips. Later, he meets Eddie’s hockey coach, who remembers how vast Eddie looked with all of his padding on; then, he talks to the rest of his children, who remember all the funny things Eddie used to do.

Finally, when Michael gets home, he realises that Eddie hasn’t gone. Eddie is there, at home, and he’s out there, with the people that remember him.

Poet and children’s book legend Michael Rosen lost his son Eddie when Eddie was just 19, and wrote his legendary picture book Michael Rosen’s Sad Book to help him process his grief. This deeply moving companion book explores the power of memory when dealing with grief and loss with Michael Rosen’s inimitable warmth, simplicity and directness.
