About this book

When Pear’s grandma is diagnosed with dementia, her family moves into her cottage to care for her. Pear has a lot to grapple with: as well as the gradual fading of her grandma’s memories, she must tackle a new school with a new group of children calling her the same old names. But relief comes in the form of a rescue dog named Piglet. His endless capacity for listening and loving allows Pear to begin reclaiming her life. Gradually, she unlocks her inner confidence, rediscovers her passion for music, makes new friends and comes to terms with her grandma’s condition.

This is a beautiful and poignant verse novel from debut author Jessica Mary Ellis. The reader is invited into Pear’s inner world in a truly immersive way and will empathise with her as she negotiates this difficult period of her life. She is earnest and vulnerable as she bears her soul through poetry, letters and internal monologues, and she has a supportive community of family, friends and other role models around her. Pear’s journey to self-acceptance is comforting and empowering at the same time and her grandma’s condition is portrayed sensitively.

As this book is written in verse there is less text on the page which will help many readers access the story. The writing is also complimented by characterful black-and-white illustrations from Sophie Burrows that are dotted throughout the story and bring an extra layer of vibrancy to this fantastic book.
