About this book

Waffles the dog loves hugs, but Julius the cat definitley does not. This doesn't stop Waffles from trying though, and he pulls out every trick in the book to bag a cuddle from his grumpy friend. He tries asking, very politely and very often, but that doesn't work. He tries bringing Julius a stick, making a funny face, singing a song and even launching a surprise hug attack. All to no avail. Then, after a hug chase through the zoo, things get a bit out of hand, and Waffles realises that not everyone is as pro-hugging as he is. Maybe by being patient, and giving Julius time and space, he might just get the hug he's been craving after all.

Like all of Ed Vere's work this seemingly simple story conveys a depth of feeling and emotion that is perfectly pitched for young readers. Waffles and Julius are an awesome sunshine/grumpy pair of friends and their personalities shine out strongly thanks to incredibly expressive artwork. Readers will really feel Waffles' energy and enthusiasm and laugh at his brilliant juxtopositaion against Julius' stoic grumpiness.

At its heart, this story conveys a message of empathy and understanding between friends. Even though you may be feeling like Waffles and wanting to go go go, your friend might be having a quieter, more Julius day, and might need a bit of patience and understanding.

A beautiful story that would serve as an excellent prompt for a PSHE lesson on frendship and boundaries.
