About this book
Twins Scarlett and Thomas are learning about the Maya at school and discover that they were the first people to harvest cacao beans to make chocolate.
When their grandfather is poorly, the twins want to make him a delicious cup of hot chocolate to perk him up. However, they can’t find any cocoa powder, so decide to use Grandad’s secret time machine to travel back to ancient Maya times and gather some cacao beans.
Setting the year to 859 AD, the siblings journey to Tikal in Guatemala. While Scarlett befriends the King’s eldest daughter, Thomas is seized by guards for stealing cacao fruit and must work as a slave to build the King's temple. To earn his freedom, Thomas volunteers to participate in a ball game, but is appalled when he realises that losing will result in certain death. Can the twins find their way home before it’s too late, and will Grandad ever get his hot chocolate?
This thrilling chapter book, the fourth in the Time Travel Twins series, is packed full of historical detail, bringing this era alive for young readers. Black-and-white drawings help children to visualise the buildings, clothing and artefacts from this period.
