About this book
Mae and her pet cat Tiger are the best of friends. So long as the two of them are together, the garden isn’t just a garden; it’s a vast, teeming jungle, ripe for adventure and exploration, until the call for teatime.
But Tiger is getting older. Soon he is sleeping more than exploring, until eventually, one day, he doesn’t come home.
At first, Mae struggles with deep feelings of loss – she lets out an almighty roar and shuts herself away from their beloved jungle. But with a little time and gentle guidance from Mum to share stories and memories of her dear pet, Mae slowly moves forward, remembering all that Tiger gave her and left behind.
This warmly illustrated picture book gorgeously renders the special bond between a child and their pet, as well as handling in both a sensitive and practical way the significant emotional impact that the death of a pet can have.
The end pages are a particularly thoughtful and helpful accompaniment to the story, offering a space for children to write and reflect on memories of their own pets, as well as providing tips on supporting children following the loss of a pet.
