About this book

Across the sea, over the island mountains, through the forest and over the swamp, travels a boy as he searches for the treasure of Pirate Frank. The path he must follow is clearly marked on his map, but what will he find at the end? The treasure he’s searching for? Or a surprise that isn’t marked on the map?

This accessible, rhyming story gradually builds up as each new obstacle the main character encounters is added in, offering gentle repetition but without the story becoming actually repetitive. It effectively builds the tension whilst avoiding any really scary obstacles! And the twist where ‘X’ marks the spot is fresh and fun. Offering a similar reading experience to the classic We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, but for a slightly older audience, it’s a great book that can be enjoyed again and again.

About the author

Elspeth was born during a snowstorm in Northumberland, England. After university, she became passionately interested in reading to her children and understanding how children learn to read. Elspeth began to write books for children -some with her husband, and fellow author, Mal Peet.

About the author

Mal Peet grew up in a council estate in north Norfolk in a family that he describes as 'emotionally impaired'. He attended the Paston School and studied English and American Studies at the University of Warwick, after which he worked at a variety of jobs before becoming a novelist at a relatively late age. He lives in Devon with his wife, Elspeth Graham, and has three children.

His first novel, Keeper (2003), won the Branford Boase Award. His second, Tamar (2005), won the 2005 Carnegie Medal. In 2007 he published The Penalty, which was shortlisted for the 2007 Book Trust Teenage Prize. He won the 2009 Guardian Children's Fiction Prize with Exposure (2008), a modern re-telling of Shakespeare's Othello. Cloud Tea Monkeys (2010), a children's picture book written in conjunction with his wife and illustrated by Juan Wijngaard, is a modern folktale set in India. He has also written Life: An Exploded Diagram (2011).
