About this book

Zeb the zebra, Barry the lemur, and Margarine the penguin meet in the queue to be given superpowers.

Unfortunately, by the time they get to the front, the Superpower Supermarket Manager has run out of ideas. So Barry gets the power to write very neatly, Margarine can make macaroni and cheese, and Zeb? Well, Zeb can blend in with a zebra crossing.

Furious at his rubbish ‘superpower’, Zeb comes up with a plan so that the trio can act like real superheroes. Surely if they stop an evil crocodile from breaking out of prison, they’ll become rich and famous? Only things don’t quite go to plan...

This is a very funny story, with lots of melodrama from Zeb and silliness around the various superpowers. It’s laid out in comic book (or graphic novel) style, with panels of illustrations, and most of the narrative is told through a few short sentences and the dialogue. The black and white illustrations are full of expression and bring the characters to life brilliantly.

The stroppy, selfish Zeb does eventually realise that his friends might feel differently to him, and he learns to work within a team.

About the author

Londoner Swapna Haddow is the award-winning children's author of the Dave Pigeon series. She loves to write about boisterous animals that cause mayhem and is working to make sure mean cats, grizzly bears and big-hearted little rabbits find their place on the bookshelves. Friendship and humour are always at the heart of what Swapna loves to write.

Her first published book, Dave Pigeon, illustrated by Sheena Dempsey, received rave reviews and went on to win three regional awards in the UK and was shortlisted for the prestigious Sainsbury's Children's Book Award. The series is based on two pigeons who find themselves battling predators in an array of madcap scenarios, all the while proving that friendship and teamwork can defeat anything. Swapna now lives in New Zealand with her husband, son and their dog, Archie.
