About this book
Commander Julia and her team of scientists have been exploring space for ten years in their ship, Misson Star Drifter, looking for other life forms.
However, after all this time, they have found nothing, and Commander Julia – and her crew – are very tired and dispirited.
When the crew of the Mission Star Drifter find a last planet to explore, it initially seems the same as the rest: harsh, cold and lonely. Commander Julia has decided that if they don’t find any life on this one, they will go home.
Yet, when the ship’s dog Khan goes missing, a tremendous discovery is made…
Chloe Savage’s stunning picture book about the possibility of life on other planets is both an homage to the brilliant works of astrophysicists, astrobotanists, astrogeologists and the other scientists that are studying space, and also a story about hope and teamwork.
Savage’s utterly beautiful watercolour visuals are a triumph of pinks and blues, giving a warm feel to a subject that can feel technical and cold. The spreads manage to evoke the epic scale of space and the strangeness of new worlds, as well as appeal to young readers with a kind of cuteness that makes us feel this is definitely a children’s book.
Mixing a magical and human feel with the theme of science and discovery, this is a beautiful and heartwarming book.
