A little girl has just planted some pumpkin seeds with Mum. On the same day, Mum’s new partner Sam moves in, and everything changes. All of a sudden, the little girl has to share her things, her special spaces, and worst of all, her mum. Over the passing weeks, the pumpkin seeds begin to sprout, and it’s time to plant them outside. But the little girl’s frustrations have been growing too, and when the pumpkin plant is accidentally destroyed, it’s the final straw. Thankfully, Mum and Sam are happy to listen to her concerns, and the little girl realises that through change, love and connection can also bloom. 

What makes the story particularly effective is its recognition that change can bring complicated feelings. The child’s jealousy and frustration are never dismissed, while the story gently shows that making room for someone new doesn’t mean losing the love that was already there. Its central message that love can grow rather than divide is reassuring without feeling unrealistic.  

The depiction of a same-sex couple and a blended family also offers valuable, inclusive representation, while sensitively acknowledging the emotional challenges that can follow separation and divorce. 

Brizida Magro’s illustrations complement the story beautifully, bringing warmth and personality to the characters and capturing the child’s changing emotions throughout the story. The growing pumpkin provides a lovely visual thread, mirroring the gradual growth of trust and connection.
