About this book

Pip loves his side of the valley. Each day he drinks his tea, waters his plants and checks his (thankfully empty) letterbox. The wide hills and night sky make him feel small, but he never feels the need to explore beyond the comfort of his home.

Then, when mysterious leaves are blown over from the other side of the valley, Pip plucks up his courage and sets off to explore. He journeys far, beyond the boundaries of his comfort zone, until finally, he meets another boy. After they get to know one another, Pip comes to realise that the unknown can be positive after all.

Ashling Lindsay’s beautifully expansive drawings are paired with fairly minimal text, adding to the sense of Pip’s isolation in his grand but lonely valley. She makes great use of colour and darkness, using the night sky and glowing leaves to add intrigue.

This is a touching story which encourages children to embrace new experiences and unfamiliarity. Pip is a charming character and his worries about the unknown will be relatable to many. Through his bravery, he comes to realise that new experiences can be enriching, something that would translate well to children with a fear of transitions.
