About this book
Sparrow's brother Ainsley has always been a powerful fire mage. So powerful, he burnt her when they were young. But Sparrow's never had much fire in her. When she starts at magic school, she's determined to live up to her brother's reputation and develop her fire magic abilities. But when powerful students fall ill with a strange affliction that drains their magic, Sparrow and her new friends realise it will take more than magic to solve the mystery and help save the pupils.
Centring friendship and decency, rather than power, this debut novel feels both fresh and familiar. Readers will enjoy the magical school, and the diverse cast of characters - including a talking raven - and some may recognise the sibling dynamic of one feeling in the shadow of another. There is much to enjoy in this pacy story, not least the stylish and dynamic illustrations by the author herself.
