About this book
Marinka lives in a house with chicken legs that helps guide the dead to the stars. Life with The House is never ordinary, but she has great support from her new guardian Yaga Tatyana, Jack the jackdaw, her best friend Benjamin and of course The House itself who she loves dearly.
But something has been off with The House recently, and when the Gate that serves as a portal for the dead malfunctions and begins to grow inside it – threatening to devour the world of the living – the injured house rips itself apart and runs away.
Marinka, Benjamin and Jack trail the fleeing house as it travels across distant magical lands. Together, they must brave both physical and emotional challenges to save the injured house and find a way to heal the growing Gate within its walls.
This sequel builds beautifully on the original story, expanding the magical world inspired by Slavic folklore, but it can also be read as a standalone. Sophie Anderson’s writing is excellent, and the pacey adventure will grip readers with its mysterious creatures and wandering magic while also encouraging deep reflection as Marinka continues her journey of self-discovery and comes to terms with loss.
Fans of the first book will love returning to Marinka’s world, and new readers will find plenty of magic, adventure and emotion to enjoy. Superb!
