About this book

Half-brothers Peter and Adrian have recently moved to the small town of Barghest in the North of England. They live with their mum and Adrian’s biological dad, who Peter still refers to as “George”, in the shadow of Old Splinter – a decrepit manor house on the hill. George’s wealthy brother Lawrence purchased the house on a whim and George is now employed to manage its restoration.

The blended family live in relative harmony until the boys hear about the legend of a wishing claw that belonged to a local eccentric, and their lives begin to unravel. They seek out the magical hand and, despite various warnings, begin to make wishes. As their requests come true, they quickly learn that the greater the wish, the greater the cost…

This horror novel by the brilliant Jack Mackay is gripping, suspenseful and chilling in equal measure. There are not many overtly scary scenes, but rather a growing sense of implied unease which suffuses the narrative really effectively. The shifting family dynamics are central to the story and the growing relationship between Peter and his stepdad George is just as engaging as the spookier elements.

It’s a brilliant horror story that questions what it is that makes us truly happy and provides a powerful instance of blended family representation that will resonate with many.
