About this book

William and his adoptive dad, Ted, have always been a tight team. While most kids at school find William too chatty, too impulsive and simply too different, Dad is always there for him. But on the first day of Year 6, William is told he must share his desk with a new girl, Florence, and everything changes.

Florence’s dad, Ross, turns out to be an old friend of Ted’s, and when the two meet again at the school gate, they hit it off immediately. Soon they arrange a date, much to the irritation of their children. For very different reasons (William wanting his dad to himself, and Florence hoping her parents will reunite) the pair of frenemies form an uneasy alliance to sabotage the budding romance. So begins the chaotic “Dad Trap.”

As their plans unravel, William experiences a powerful emotional journey. Readers experience his confusion, jealousy, fear and anger, followed by remorse, understanding, acceptance and, ultimately, love as he confronts some difficult truths – including a gradual reconciliation with former best friend Jabari.

Eagleton writes in moving, vivid first-person which captures William’s wonderful creative energy and imagination, alongside the sensory pressures and anxiety he experiences because of his ADHD and autism. With warm support from friends, family and teachers, this story offers heartfelt affirmation around LGBTQIA+ identities, neurodivergence, adoption and blended families. A beautifully sensitive and heartwarming book!
