About this book

Fayson and her mother live in a small city apartment in Jamaica, where money is tight, despite Mama working long hours as a nurse. Fayson reluctantly agrees to spend half term with her annoying twin cousins, Aaron and Omar, but worries that she’ll feel out of place in their fancy holiday home on an island off the Jamaican coast.

She has always dreamed of becoming a detective, solving crimes and saving the world, so Fayson is intrigued when her cousins enlist her help to investigate a mysterious occurrence on the island: each evening, a shadowy figure appears at the top of the lighthouse, only to vanish moments later. Determined to discover the person’s identity, Fayson pieces together the clues, but is puzzled that one of the island children seems to be sabotaging her efforts to crack the case.

As well as honing her detective skills, Fayson learns that being wealthy doesn’t necessarily make people happy, as the most valuable things in life, such as love, kindness and friendship, can’t be bought.

This lively tale is the first in Di Island Crew Investigates series. Featuring short chapters, occasional black-and-white illustrations and a charming plot, it is ideal for confident younger readers.
