About this book
A wonderful family saga set in World War II. The book tells the story of three sisters Lydia, Peggy and Teddy in three distinct sections, each one set in different years around World War II. Lydia’s story takes place during the Blitz, Peggy’s in The Lull and Teddy’s in The Aftermath, so each sister is 12 when we read their story. We get to follow the war as well as their lives. There is peril, including the deaths of their father before the war, and a friend during the course of the story. It’s a story of family life and also friendship. And growing up, as they discover aged 12 just how complicated people can be, not least their own parents.
We accompany the girls as they are first evacuated to their aunt’s house in the countryside, as they later return to south London after the worst of the bombing, and then as they continue their lives in a recovering UK after the war. The book is beautifully researched and full of accurate historical detail. It’s really a very perfect accompanying book to any school study for the Second World War.
This book has the feeling of an instant classic, putting you in mind even of Little Women. It’s certainly beautifully written. It’s a long book, at over 450 pages and could almost be read as a series of three short instalments as the stories are distinct in time and place. But most readers will be too hooked not to read it all together as the interweaving storylines unfurl.
