About this book

This book is a great introduction to archaeology, the ways ancient things are preserved through thousands of years, how they are found and what they mean to history. Each highly and beautifully illustrated double-page spread is devoted to one amazing ‘greatest hits’ artefact from around the world and the stories they tell us about people’s lives.

There are 10 objects in all, including Otzi the Iceman’s famous Copper Axe from between 3350-3100 BCE, the world’s oldest ‘computer’ Ancient Greece’s Antikythera which was preserved underwater for over 2000 years, and the sandal of Pharoah Tutankhamun. Detailed illustrations and bite-sized chunks of text take us back to the stories of the people connected to the objects. And we get to touch embossed illustrations of these treasures and imagine digging them up.

It’s a fascinating treasure trove, with just the right amount of information to be accessible to primary-school-aged children. Raksha Dave the author is a famous archaeologist herself and an inspirational figure. This book would make a great classroom reference book; its thick pages it could withstand heavy use. It’s also perfect for a child to have at home and is such a beautiful book that it would make a wonderful present.
