About this book
13-year-old Evie lives in the Mangrove Hotel, which is enchanted by Obeah magic.
When Evie and her friend Arthur decide that they want to attend the Myal, a magical ceremony on the beach in Ocho Rios, her adoptive mother Ms Bell forbids her from going. But Evie wants to see her mother and father, who have passed into spirit.
Yet when the ceremony summons evil spirits – duppies – which possess the people at the Myal, Evie and and Arthur have to run for their lives.
On a mission to return Arthur to his own body and defeat the duppy spirits, Evie makes friends with Cai, a trainee warrior, and the trio go on a thrilling adventure to defeat the Blackheart Man and his evil plan to steal the island’s magic.
This magical, thoughtful, and beautifully written tale set in a fictional Jamaica is a complete joy to read. It captures the reader from the start with an intriguing prologue and keeps the pace fast with dual point of view chapters from Evie and Cai.
Author Ashley Thorpe presents the reader with a deep and thorough background of Obeah magic alongside a rollicking good story. There's plenty of high-stakes action, wonderful and original characters that feel three-dimensional, and a lot of heart.
