About this book

Our story begins in the left nostril of a girl called Phoebe, where Simon the piece of snot lives with his snot family (or mucus family, as his mother insists).

Simon dreams of being a hero but, thanks to his wonderfully grumpy sister, feels like he’ll never be more than just a “useless bit of snot”.

Then, when Phoebe’s nose is threatened by a cloud of pollution, Simon steps forward and gobbles up the fumes. Cat hair? Dust? Bacteria? All are no match for Simon as he bravely protects Phoebe from harm, all while avoiding the perils of her nose-picking habits!

It seems that Simon is not useless after all; he is, in fact, an important line of defence for the body. Satisfied, he prepares for one last epic adventure, to be sneezed out into the world along with all the gunk he has swallowed. Achoo!

This superbly playful book hits the mark on so many levels. It features plenty of snot-tastic grossness that children will enjoy; it’s packed with one-liners, snot puns, and quirky details to spot in the fun illustrations; the characters are distinct and hilarious; and the scientific explanation of the function of mucus is perfectly pitched to the age range and is genuinely interesting.

A brilliant picture book which will entertain as much as it educates. Superb!
