When Gabe gets home from school one day, there’s a surprise: a cat named Art, who is their new pet!  

Art hides behind the couch when Dad vacuums and in the clothes basket when Mum makes a smoothie, and won’t even come out for treats or to play with the feather toy. Yet, Gabe – who feels shy himself sometimes – knows the best way to bring Art out of his shell. 

By waiting patiently and not forcing Art out of his hiding place, Gabe makes a special bond with his new cat by reading quietly and calmly in his presence. Finally, Art ventures out from his hiding place and sits on Gabe’s lap. 

Finally, when it’s Gabe’s turn to deliver a book report at school, he manages to overcome his nerves and be brave – inspired by Art. 

This is a sweet, sensitive book for children who may have just got a new pet; there’s lots here about learning consent and being gentle, as well as celebrating the special friendship between children and animals. Ken Wilson Max’s illustrations capture the warmth of Gabe and his family to perfection, and Alex Falase-Koya’s story is well paced and thoughtful.
