About this book
Eddie is staying with Uncle John while his little sister Scarlet has her big operation. She's been ill for a long time and has become the focus of the whole family.
Eddie always tries to be good and not cause trouble or worry his parents. He has given up friends, hobbies, and doing the things he used to enjoy so he can look after Scarlet, keep her company, and make her happy. She never asked him to do it; he does it because he loves her.
At Uncle John’s, he takes long walks in the woods to stop himself worrying about his sister. There, he meets a robin who leads him to a strange ghostly girl and ancient trees he can talk to. And, gradually, Eddie rediscovers the person he used to be.
This poetic, allegorical tale takes a hard look at the reality of living with a chronically ill sibling and how it affects family dynamics, with both seen and unseen consequences.
Time, space, and encouragement from his strange, new friends help Eddie to understand he is allowed to be happy in his own right and to find his voice – in more ways than one.
